After four years of construction, Miami-based Celebrity Cruises debuted the 129,500-ton Celebrity Edge last Monday at Port Everglades.
The $900 million ship will sail 7-night eastern and western Caribbean itineraries. Celebrity Edge is the cruise line’s 13th ship and will bring 500,000 additional passengers to Port Everglades.
Celebrity Cruise President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said the ship will have a “big economic” impact on Broward County because tourism is important in the tri-county area. The people who work at the terminal are local, she added.
“The more that we grow and bring more ships into Celebrity’s fleet, the more jobs that we create,” Lutoff-Perlo said.
Monday’s event also celebrated the grand opening of Terminal 25. Originally built 26 years ago, the terminal was reconstructed specifically for Celebrity Cruises, Lutoff-Perlo said.
According to the port, the $120 million renovation is “the largest financial investment that Port Everglades has made in a cruise terminal.”
The terminal’s economic impact includes an estimated 280 jobs locally, 600 jobs statewide and almost $7.4 million in state and local taxes, according to the port.
