LEESBURG — The Lake County Commission has agreed to contribute $150,000 toward a new seaplane ramp and dock planned for Leesburg.

The $2.6 million project was approved by the Leesburg City Commission in June and includes a $920,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. The dock and taxi lane would extend into Lake Harris from the Leesburg International Airport.

The new dock and ramp would give seaplanes access to maintenance services available at the airport. Now, planes dock at Tavares’ Wooton Park, which has limited space and services. Known as “America’s Seaplane City,” Tavares officials welcome the new dock and ramp.

Tavares holds two fly-in events every year, which are buoyed by private waterfront restaurants and hotels. Wooton also features a children’s splash park, playgrounds, a fishing pier and two boat ramps.
