The new Pensacola Bay Bridge has reached a construction milestone. The Florida Department of Transportation said crews drove the final concrete pilings for the eastbound lanes last week. There are more than 1,000 pilings for the eastbound bridge alone. Crews are also more than one-third of the way finished with driving the westbound bridge pilings.

FDOT said the plan is to complete the eastbound structure early next year. They’ll create four temporary lanes – two for eastbound traffic and two for westbound traffic. They’ll be able to demolish the current bridge and finish the westbound’s structure.

The entire bridge is expected to be completed in 2020.
