Florida continually works to identify, support, advance and manage cost effective, efficient and safe transportation systems and alternatives to maximize the passenger carrying capacity of surface transportation facilities.
Importance of Transit
Transit supports a strong economy. Federal funds used to support fixed-route transit in Florida increase the state’s annual economic output by $464 million, support 4,041 jobs each year, and increase annual labor income by $192 million. Every dollar of federal money invested in Florida’s fixed-route transit increases economic activity by $2.30. Long-term investment in rail transit infrastructure can promote development, create vibrant, walkable communities and increase property values. FDOT’s Transit Office focuses on transit planning, grants administration and commuter assistance and transit operations. The transit planning unit provides technical assistance and training on policy analysis, transit development plan guidelines, static and real time transit information systems, transit oriented development, integration of transit in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) systems, support for travel demand modeling and development of quality of service measures.
